As a teenager, I spent lot of overnights at my grandparents’ house, forging a close bond with my grandma. During those stays, I found myself drawn to the kitchen, where my grandmother would work her culinary magic.
Little did I know that these seemingly ordinary moments would shape my future in unexpected ways. You see, at that time, I had already become quite knowledgeable about computers, having started my journey into the world of technology at the age of twelve.
Consequently, whenever any technical issues arose within the family or among relatives — be it with radios, TVs, video recorders, or computers — they turned to me for a solution.
It was during one of those moments in my grandma’s kitchen that she uttered a simple phrase that would have a profound impact on my life. After I had explained a computer concept to her, she remarked, “You are really good at explaining.”
Encouraged by her words, I began to explain even more to her, and she continued to praise my ability to convey complex ideas in a comprehensible manner. Little did I realize back then, but her words planted a seed of belief within me that has guided me throughout my professional journey.
Today, with over 30 years of industry experience and a decade working as a consultant, I can confidently say that my grandma was right. I owe much of my success to her timely encouragement. Her words inspired me to hone my communication skills, enabling me to explain even the most intricate subjects effectively.
Whether it’s giving a speech, creating a slide show, writing code, composing articles for my blog, or simply explaining things to those around me, her wisdom has influenced my approach at every level. What she said became one of my fundamental strengths.
Moreover, I discovered that the ability to explain something well goes beyond effective communication. It enhances understanding and facilitates problem-solving.
By finding ways to illustrate complex concepts through metaphors, examples from different industries, or real-life scenarios, I am able to connect with others on a deeper level. This flexibility in presenting, discussing, and advising allows me to offer unique perspectives and insights.
Reflecting on my journey, I realize the importance of recognizing one’s strengths early in life and having unwavering belief in them. My grandma’s consistent affirmation instilled in me a sense of purpose and the confidence to utilize my communication skills in all aspects of life. By harnessing these strengths, we can navigate any situation with greater effectiveness and influence.
I am grateful to my grandma for the profound impact she had on my life. Her words of encouragement continue to resonate with me, shaping the person I am today.
It serves as a reminder that each of us has the power to positively influence others, especially our children, grandchildren, and young people. By being a positive mentor and providing support early on, we can help them discover and leverage their own strengths.
In conclusion, effective communication is a skill that transcends boundaries and empowers individuals to succeed in various aspects of life. My personal journey is a testament to the transformative power of encouraging and nurturing such skills.
Believe if grandma is telling you something 🙂
